Main techologies

The two main technologies to prevent fouling today are antifouling and fouling release coatings.

The principle behind antifouling coatings has been know for years: Active ingredients incorporated in the paint film are made accessible via a combination of chemical and physical action from the surrounding water.

The principle behind fouling release coatings has also been known for years. However, exploitation as fouling prevention has only started recently. The working mechanism is purely physical where a very smooth and flexible coating with low surface tension simply releases the fouling organisms with help from the motion of the water once the vessel is sailing.

Hempel offers a wide rage of antifouling products of different qualities and for different service time up to 5 years. GLOBIC NCT - based on groundbreaking nanocapsule acrylate technology - for optimum fuel-saving benefits, OCEANIC - for the seven seas, and OLYMPIC – TBT-free antifouling. Needless to say – all our antifoulings are TBT-free.

In addition to the antifoulings, Hempel offers a range of silicone based fouling release coatings for vessels with high activity and/or speed. HEMPASIL 77500 – the high-activity approach to surface coating, and HEMPASIL 77100 – the fast track for surface coating.
