Paint Technology

At the heart of HEMPEL's research and development success are various areas of expertise. They range from coating systems for containers, rail cars, wind turbines, pipelines, ships, oil and gas terminals, refineries, and bridges, through to shopprimers for newly prepared steel.

HEMPEL's strength in paint technology includes:

1: Shopprimers - Freshly blasted/cleaned steel surfaces require protection against corrosion during the period of storage, fabrication and construction. For this specific purpose HEMPEL has developed a competitive high performance range of both solvent and water-borne shopprimer products.

2: Container coatings - Transport containers require protection against aggressive environments as well as numerous types of cargo. HEMPEL has developed coatings with lower VOC (Volatile Organic Content), carbon tetrachloride-free chlorinated rubber paints and water-borne systems. All of these are able to meet the exact and stringent demands of customers and legislative bodies as well as health and safety regulations.

3: Pipeline coatings - Pipes need to be protected both in and outside. On the inside, from the material the pipe is carrying and on the outside from the environment.

4: Ballast tank coatings - With the development of "user friendly" light coloured ballast tank coatings, HEMPEL is now able to offer easy application and inspection coatings for long-term protection. HEMPEL has achieved the highest recommendation by obtaining the Marine Materials Approval Certificates.

5: Antifouling coatings - Ship owners require protection of their vessel both above and below the water-line. HEMPEL has, over many years, developed efficient antifouling coatings which are able to protect surfaces from growth of marine organisms for up to 5 years. With the future of the environment in mind, HEMPEL has developed biocide-free systems and "non-stick" fouling release coatings.

6: Water-borne coatings - In close collaboration with customers HEMPEL has developed a wide range of water-borne coating systems. In most sectors of industry, such as oil tanks, bridges, containers and industrial plants, HEMPEL's water-borne HEMUDUR and HEMUCRYL systems may be found.

7: Wind Turbine coatings - Presently HEMPEL has developed several state of the art coating systems for the protection of wind turbines all over the world.

At the new R&D facilities, HEMPEL has combined the knowledge and experience of specialised scientists from all branches of paint technology to ensure that HEMPEL is a world leader in coating formulation and production.
